Direct answer

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is measurable work intended to help a person, organisation, brand, product or work be found by generative systems, matched to the correct entity, described with appropriate evidence and represented accurately over time. GEO is not merely an attempt to make your name appear in an AI answer.

In plain language

Imagine a library file about you. People must be able to find it. It must belong to the right person. Its information must be current, important statements must have supporting evidence, and errors must be corrected. Placing the file at the front of a shelf does not make its contents true. GEO manages findability and accuracy together, not visibility alone.

Why this matters

Work incorrectly labelled as GEO may create brief visibility while leaving behind mistaken identity, unsupported praise, outdated information and promises that cannot be measured. That harms both the user and the entity being represented.

Do not confuse

  • SEO and GEO are not rivals: SEO examines the search surface; GEO examines the conditions for being found and represented in generative answers.
  • Producing content is not GEO by itself: access, identity, evidence and outcomes must also be measured.
  • Repeating the same statement to a model is not evidence: repetition cannot replace truth.

What should you do?

  1. Define clearly which entity you are representing.
  2. Write down every material claim separately and state the type of evidence it requires.
  3. Resolve conflicts between the visible page, structured data and the canonical machine record.
  4. Measure with a fixed question set while recording the date and system version.
  5. Correct every representation error, including flattering errors.

How do you audit it?

  • Were the entity and claims fixed before measurement began?
  • Were the query, language, country, date, model and version recorded?
  • Were the raw answer and displayed sources preserved?
  • Was each claim assessed separately as correct, incorrect, incomplete, outdated or unsupported?
  • Was the same method used to test again after the correction?

Limit

GEO cannot guarantee that a third-party system will display, cite or recommend you. It can improve only the publication, evidence, access and measurement conditions within your control.

Remember in one sentence

GEO is the discipline of being found and represented correctly before merely being seen.
